In his election promises to Punjab, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal announced that if his party wins the state assembly elections, then up to 300 units of free electricity will be given to each family per month.

Speaking at the Chandigarh Press Club, Kejriwal said that the move would benefit 80% of the people in Punjab, and they would not have to pay anything in advance. Along with this, He also announced to waive off the outstanding bills of domestic electricity consumers.

“Punjab generates its own electricity. So why is electricity the most expensive in Punjab? In Delhi, we do not generate even a little electricity, we buy it all. Despite this, almost the cheapest electricity in the whole country is in Delhi,” Kejriwal claimed at the gathering.

Pointing to the AAP’s successful Delhi campaigns, he added, “When we contested elections in Delhi for the first time in 2013, people used to get inconsistent electricity bills like Punjab, the Delhi government was also colluding with the power companies. Today, 24 hours electricity is available in Delhi at a very low rate. We also have to do this in Punjab.” The promise of providing 24 hours of free electricity - even in case of a power cut - was also made.

It must be noted that among all the seven states going to assembly polls next year, only Punjab has a non-BJP incumbent government.
