InFocus: Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Expansion - An Overview

The much-awaited cabinet expansion of the Yogi government saw seven new inductions, about five months before the Assembly elections.

The BJP has given a message of harmony and an opportunity to the person standing on the last rung by expanding the cabinet. Most of the new faces are young. Looking at the social equation, the leaders include one upper-caste Brahmin, three from the OBCs, one Scheduled Tribe, and two Scheduled Caste leaders also find themselves in the cabinet.

Jitin Prasad has been included in the cabinet while Palturam, Sanjeev Kumar, Sangeeta Bind, Dinesh Khatik, Dharamveer Prajapati and Chhatrapal Gangwar became ministers of state. Governor Anandiben Patel has administered all the oaths of office and secrecy. BJP is facing the displeasure of Brahmins which they want to satiate through Jitin Prasada. He has recently joined BJP from Congress and has much influence in the Brahmin dominated area of Shahjahanpur.

Palturam and Dinesh Khatik come from the SC category. Palturam, from the Jatab community, has much influence in West and Central Uttar Pradesh, and Dinesh Khatik from the Khatik society has many assemblies in UP - from west to central and east.

The importance of smaller communities was also taken into account by including Dharamveer Prajapati in the cabinet. Although the Prajapati community does not have a substantial political impact in terms of votes, still it has been given a place in the cabinet. Moreover, with around 100 seats with Nishad voters, BJP has also included Sangeeta Bind to cultivate Nishad votes.

Sanjeev Kumar comes from the Gond tribal community. Political experts are marking it as an exercise from the Sonbhadra region to keep the tribal community connected. The tribal class has a significant vote bank in eastern UP. The MLA from Bareilly, Chhatrapal Gangwar, comes from the Kurmi community. The Centre discharged Santosh Gangwar a few days ago, so an attempt has is being made to channelize Kurmi votes by giving place to Chhatrapal Gangwar.

Chief Minister Adityanath, through shrewd social engineering, has given a place in the cabinet expansion to such small sections of people, whose political influence is not very big, but they influence many assemblies. Adityanath said to India Today, “Today’s expansion gives representation to all sections, has been done with the feeling of social balance, and carries the message of harmony,” He further added that it allows an opportunity to those belonging to weaker sections.

At the same time, SP President Akhilesh Yadav said that the cabinet expansion of the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh is a hoax. “Today, a drama is being created to represent those who lost their rights for four and a half years. Till the time the colour of the names of the new ministers dries up, the model code of conduct for the 2022 elections will be implemented. The concluding point of the BJP drama has started.”
