Aarogya Setu has a new feature that will allow organisations to get the health status of their employees or any other user without violating their data privacy, an official release from the Ministry of Electronics and IT said on August 22.

The statement further added that the new feature called, ‘Open API Service’ will help businesses to check the status of Aarogya Setu users and integrate it into its various work from home features. The purpose is to enable businesses to resume their operations while following protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Open API can be availed by organisations and business entities, who are registered in India and have more than 50 employees. They can use it to get the health status of their employees or any other Aarogya Setu user, who have provided their consent for sharing their health status with that entity in real time. The ministry asserted that the service shall only provide the Aarogya Setu status and the user’s name and no other personal data can be accessed using the medium. Firms can register for Open API Service here.

“Aarogya Setu, the government’s mobile phone-based contact-tracing application meant to identify people with COVID-19, has helped identify more than 30,000 virus hotspots, thus, assisting health officials and administration to take necessary precautionary steps,” the statement said.

However, several cybersecurity experts have called out the application over privacy concerns. Earlier this month, the threat intelligence firm, Shadow Map published in a blog post that it found the login credentials used by developers of Aarogya Setu out there in the open on a government website, allowing anyone to gain access to large parts of the code and other software infrastructure that, if accessed by hackers, could expose location, contact, and health data of the users.

Aarogya Setu has now emerged as the most downloaded contact tracing app in the world, with more than 15 crore users.
