The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Wednesday cancelled class 10 exams and postponed class 12 exams in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases. The CBSE 10th and 12th board exams were scheduled to be held from May 4.

NDTV reported that the decision was taken at a high level in the presence of PM Narendra Modi, and Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal - who also serves as the PM’s Principal Secretary as well as the Cabinet Secretary - and other head officials. Schools had finally reopened in January after months of online classes but due to the rising number of COVID cases, schools had shut down in 11 states.

Earlier, CBSE had said the board will take all the necessary precautions to conduct these exams safely but looking at this situation, the government has decided to postpone the exams.

The board Exams for Class 12th which were supposed to be held from May 4 to June 14 are hereby postponed. These exams will be held hereafter. The situation will be reviewed on 1st June 2021 by the Board, and details will be shared subsequently. A notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the examinations, TOI reported.

The board Exams for Class 10 which were also scheduled between the same dates will be marked on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the board.

Opposition leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi have been appealing to the Centre to postpone board exams. Parents, child rights bodies, several state governments have also made similar appeals to the Centre to reconsider the plan to conduct offline CBSE board exams next month.

Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal welcomed the decision to cancel CBSE class 10 board exams and postpone class 12 exams. “I am glad that the exams have been cancelled. This is a great relief for lakhs of students and their parents,” he tweeted.

Over 1.84 lakh new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in the country. Maharashtra, which will impose strict restrictions from today evening, has deferred the HSC and the SSC exam dates.
