IIT Kharagpur Suspends Teacher Who Abused SC, ST Students During Online Class
By: Annanya Rana
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, has suspended the professor who had reportedly directed verbal abuse at students belonging to the scheduled castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST) categories and those with physical disabilities during an online preparatory session, PTI reported. Footage of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Seema Singh, an associate professor of English from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been suspended until further orders, Tamal Nath, IIT Kharagpur registrar said to Hindustan Times. “A fact-finding committee had been instituted to look into the allegations and has submitted its report. We are now instituting an internal inquiry.”
The move came after an alumni body of other IITs wrote to the head of the humanities department in Kharagpur to take legal action against Singh. In the letter, the alumni said that they were “horrified” by the video that emerged about a week back. They urged the department to take instant action against the breaking of classroom ethics, create a safe space for marginalised students to place their grievances and attend to them on an urgent basis with immediate action
Singh will only be allowed to resume her duties after further orders are announced.
Students claim that the teacher got angry when some of them had reportedly not stood up for the national anthem and did not say “Bharat mata ki jai!” after which she lost her cool and started verbally abusing students.
The incidents took place in one of the online sessions of the preparatory classes held to train SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
In the widely circulated video, the teacher had cursed the students and their parents repeatedly. She could also be heard saying, “I will continue calling you that and no one on the planet can stop me.”
